Splints

Protection for the teeth.

Those who grind their teeth at night wear them down without noticing. A custom-made splint protects the teeth and relieves the chewing muscles. There is also a splint solution against snoring.

How we work.

  • Protection from wear

The splint prevents grinding and clenching from wearing away the enamel and also protects crowns, veneers and fillings.

  • Custom splint

Made individually in our own lab, the splint fits precisely and does not disturb sleep. Off-the-shelf splints rarely fit well.

  • Also against snoring

A special splint holds the lower jaw slightly forward and can reduce snoring. If sleep apnoea is suspected, we clarify this medically beforehand.

Why a splint

Many people grind or clench their teeth at night without knowing it. Over time this wears away the enamel, strains the jaw joint and can damage crowns, veneers and fillings. A custom-made splint sits protectively between the rows of teeth and absorbs the forces that would otherwise act on the teeth.

Signs of grinding

Typical are morning tension, sensitive or visibly flattened teeth and headaches after waking. If the grinding is connected with jaw joint complaints, we check this as part of TMJ treatment, which looks into the cause.

The night guard

The night guard is made from an impression or intraoral scan in our own lab. It fits precisely, is usually worn at night and protects the teeth from wear. An individually made splint fits considerably better than a preformed splint from the shop and disturbs sleep less.

The anti-snoring splint

Against snoring there is a special splint that holds the lower jaw slightly forward and thereby keeps the airways open. It can reduce snoring. It is important to clarify sleep apnoea medically beforehand, because this belongs in medical treatment and not in the dental practice alone.

From our own lab

Both splints are made in our own laboratory in Zurich. The individual fabrication ensures a precise fit and makes later adjustments easier, because treatment and technology work together directly.

Care

The splint is cleaned with cold water and a brush after wearing and stored dry. At the regular check-up appointments we examine the fit and the wear and replace the splint when it is bitten through.

Protocol

Three steps.

  1. 01 · Findings and impression

We check for signs of grinding and take an impression or intraoral scan for the individual splint.

  2. 02 · Fitting

The splint made in our own lab is inserted and adjusted so that it sits securely and guides the bite evenly.

  3. 03 · Check-up

After a short wearing period we check fit and effect and adjust if needed. Regular check-ups keep the splint effective.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked

Why do I need a night guard?

Night-time grinding and clenching wear away enamel over time, can loosen teeth and damage crowns or veneers. The splint sits protectively between the rows of teeth, distributes the forces and relieves the chewing muscles and the jaw joint.

How do I know if I grind?

Signs are morning tension in the jaw, sensitive or flattened teeth, headaches in the morning and sometimes sounds noticed by a partner. Often the grinding is only noticed at the dental check-up from the wear marks.

How long does a splint last?

With good care a splint lasts several years. How quickly it wears depends on the strength of the grinding. We check it at the regular appointments and replace it when it is bitten through.

Does insurance cover the cost?

We bill according to the SSO tariff and provide a written cost estimate in advance. Whether supplementary insurance covers part depends on the contract. Basic insurance covers splints only in narrowly defined exceptional cases.

Does a splint help against snoring?

A mandibular advancement splint holds the lower jaw slightly forward and can reduce snoring by keeping the airways open. If sleep apnoea is behind it, a medical assessment is needed before a splint comes into question.
