Why a splint
Many people grind or clench their teeth at night without knowing it. Over time this wears away the enamel, strains the jaw joint and can damage crowns, veneers and fillings. A custom-made splint sits protectively between the rows of teeth and absorbs the forces that would otherwise act on the teeth.
Signs of grinding
Typical are morning tension, sensitive or visibly flattened teeth and headaches after waking. If the grinding is connected with jaw joint complaints, we check this as part of TMJ treatment, which looks into the cause.
The night guard
The night guard is made from an impression or intraoral scan in our own lab. It fits precisely, is usually worn at night and protects the teeth from wear. An individually made splint fits considerably better than a preformed splint from the shop and disturbs sleep less.
The anti-snoring splint
Against snoring there is a special splint that holds the lower jaw slightly forward and thereby keeps the airways open. It can reduce snoring. It is important to clarify sleep apnoea medically beforehand, because this belongs in medical treatment and not in the dental practice alone.
From our own lab
Both splints are made in our own laboratory in Zurich. The individual fabrication ensures a precise fit and makes later adjustments easier, because treatment and technology work together directly.
Care
The splint is cleaned with cold water and a brush after wearing and stored dry. At the regular check-up appointments we examine the fit and the wear and replace the splint when it is bitten through.
