Function and Jaw Joint

The jaw joint in balance.

Pain in the jaw joint, clicking on opening or morning tension often share a common cause. We analyse the function of joint, muscles and bite and provide relief with a custom-made splint.

Values

How we work.

  • Functional analysis

We examine the jaw joint, chewing muscles and bite systematically, instead of looking only at the symptom. This reveals the cause of the complaints.

  • Custom splint

A splint made in our own lab relieves the joint and muscles and protects the teeth from the consequences of grinding.

  • Cause, not symptom

We look for the triggers, such as overload, night-time grinding or stress, and do not treat only the pain.

What functional disorders are

The chewing system of jaw joint, muscles and teeth ideally works together smoothly. When this interplay is disturbed, it is called a temporomandibular disorder, TMD for short, also known as CMD. The complaints are varied and are often not immediately linked to the jaw.

Symptoms

Typical signs are pain in the jaw joint or chewing muscles, clicking on opening, restricted mouth opening and morning tension. Recurring headaches and neck pain can also originate in the chewing system.

Functional analysis

It begins with a systematic examination of joint, muscles and bite. We record where the load arises and which triggers play a role. Only on this basis do we determine the treatment, instead of prematurely easing only the symptom.

Splint therapy

The most common and gentlest measure is an individually made splint from our own lab. It relieves the jaw joint, relaxes the muscles and protects the teeth from wear caused by night-time grinding. Depending on the findings, we complement it with exercises or further measures.

Addressing causes

Functional disorders rarely have a single cause. Overload, night-time grinding and stress often act together. We therefore treat not only the pain but look for the triggers and include them in the therapy, in cooperation with further specialists if needed.

Protocol

Three steps.

  1. 01 · Functional analysis

Examination of jaw joint, muscles and bite, recording of complaints and their triggers. The further approach follows from this.

  2. 02 · Splint and therapy

Fabrication of an individual splint from our own lab, complemented by exercises or further measures depending on the findings.

  3. 03 · Check-up and adjustment

We check the effect, adjust the splint and accompany the course until the complaints improve.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked

What is TMD?

TMD stands for temporomandibular disorder, a dysfunction of the chewing system, also known as CMD. Jaw joint, chewing muscles and teeth do not work together harmoniously. This can lead to pain, clicking and tension that radiate into the head and neck.

Which symptoms point to it?

Typical are pain in the jaw joint or chewing muscles, clicking or grating on opening, restricted mouth opening, morning tension and headaches or neck pain. There is often a connection with night-time grinding.

Does a splint help?

An individually made splint relieves the jaw joint and the muscles and protects the teeth from wear. For many functional disorders it is the first and gentlest measure. How it is used depends on the functional analysis.

Does insurance cover the cost?

We bill according to the SSO tariff and provide a written cost estimate before treatment begins. Whether part is covered by supplementary insurance depends on your contract. Basic insurance covers these treatments only in exceptional cases.

Is it related to stress?

Often yes. Tension intensifies clenching and grinding, frequently unconsciously and especially at night. The splint protects the teeth and provides relief, but lasting improvement usually succeeds only when the triggers are also addressed.
