Symptom-specific first aid
What happened?
Every emergency has its own first fifteen minutes that shape the outcome. Choose the symptom that fits best and follow the step-by-step guide.
- Acute Replantation: 30 to 60 minutes. Every minute counts.
Knocked-Out or Lost Tooth
A knocked-out tooth can often be reinserted if you store it correctly and act immediately. Every half hour delay halves the success rate.

Triage
What counts as a dental emergency.
Acute · immediately
Treatment within one hour
Knocked-out permanent tooth, heavy bleeding after a treatment, difficulty breathing or swallowing combined with swelling. Call the emergency number immediately, or 144 if breathing is impaired.
Urgent · within 24 hours
Appointment the same or next day
Throbbing toothache, broken tooth with pulp involvement, acute abscess without swallowing difficulty, swelling on cheek or jaw. Call during opening hours, appointment usually the same day.
Soon · within days
Appointment in the coming working days
Lost crown or filling without pain, loosened tooth without pulp involvement, mild pressure pain when biting. Call on a normal working day, appointment within two to three days.
Insurance
Who covers the cost.
For an accident (fall, sport, traffic, blow) the accident insurance is responsible, not the health insurer. Note the date, time and circumstances immediately. For schoolchildren the school insurance is the first point of contact, for employed people Suva or private insurance. We help you with the registration.
For acute pain without accident (pulpitis, abscess, lost crown) the treatment costs are usually borne privately. With supplementary insurance including a dental care module, check the conditions. We issue you a written cost estimate.
