Range instead of fixed price
Concrete root canal costs can only be seriously stated after assessment and X-ray, because the anatomy of root canals varies strongly per tooth. A range across Swiss practices, however, can be stated. For the pure root canal treatment without definitive restoration with crown or build-up, the range typically moves between CHF 600 and 2,000.
Including the medically mandatory definitive restoration, between CHF 800 and 2,500 are added depending on chosen material. In total a complete treatment lies between CHF 1,400 and 4,500. This range is wide because the variability factors are significant.
We do not name concrete Resident prices because the Swiss SSO dental tariff is standardized and individual amounts are communicated after assessment and diagnostics. You receive a written cost estimate before treatment begins.
What components the costs consist of
A complete endodontic treatment consists of multiple components:
Diagnostics. Clinical examination, sensitivity test, X-ray. With complex anatomy additionally three-dimensional imaging (CBCT). Diagnostics block: CHF 100 to 350.
Root canal treatment itself. Local anesthesia, application of rubber dam (medically mandatory), opening of the tooth, mechanical preparation of root canals, antibacterial irrigation, bacteria-tight root canal filling with gutta-percha. This main service varies by number of root canals:
- Single-rooted tooth (e.g. incisor): typically CHF 600 to 900
- Two-rooted tooth (e.g. some premolars): typically CHF 900 to 1,300
- Three-rooted tooth (e.g. upper molars): typically CHF 1,300 to 2,000
- Complex anatomy with additional canals or curvatures: surcharge possible
Definitive restoration. After the root canal treatment the tooth must be substantially restored, otherwise it fractures within a few months to years along the long axis. The options:
- Composite build-up filling: most cost-effective option, suitable with little substance loss and in the front area. Typical costs: CHF 250 to 500.
- Metal-ceramic crown: standard for molars and teeth with greater substance loss. Typical: CHF 1,200 to 1,700.
- Full ceramic crown (zirconia or lithium disilicate): aesthetic and biocompatible. Typical: CHF 1,500 to 2,200.
- Post build-up plus crown: needed with very large substance loss. Surcharge of about CHF 300 to 600 on the crown.
The definitive restoration is a medically mandatory part of the treatment and is itemized separately in the cost estimate.
What drives the costs up
Number of root canals. The most important cost driver. A three-rooted molar with three or four canals is significantly more elaborate than a single-rooted incisor.
Complex canal anatomy. Strongly curved canals, accessory lateral canals or canal calcifications make preparation more difficult and extend treatment time.
Revision (second treatment). Root canal treatments performed again after a first unsuccessful treatment are more elaborate. The old root canal filling must first be removed before the new preparation can begin. Surcharge of about 30 to 60 percent on the primary treatment.
Multiple sessions. With acute inflammation or complex anatomy two or three sessions with medicated insert in between are needed. Increases time effort and costs.
Post build-up. With very large substance loss a glass fiber or titanium post is placed in the root canal to anchor the crown. Additional costs.
Additional CBCT imaging. With complex anatomy three-dimensional imaging is medically sensible. Additional costs.
What pulls the costs down
Single-rooted incisor with clear anatomy. The simplest constellation.
Composite build-up filling instead of crown. With sufficient remaining substance medically acceptable and more cost-effective.
Primary treatment instead of revision. A freshly developed pulp inflammation at an untreated tooth is cheaper to treat.
One session instead of multiple. With simple cases the treatment is possible in one session.
What insurance covers
Swiss basic insurance does not cover root canal treatments. There are rare exceptions, such as when the tooth was damaged by an accident or the treatment is a consequence of a severe systemic disease. In these cases the cost estimate is submitted to the health insurance before treatment begins.
Supplementary insurance with dental care module can cover part of the costs, depending on tariff between 50 and 75 percent with annual maximum amount. Whether your insurance reimburses in the specific case, clarify with the written pre-inquiry. More on insurance logic in the article on health insurance at the dentist.
With financial constraints installment payment is possible, more in the article on payment plans.
Root canal in cost comparison to the alternative
The only medical alternative to root canal treatment is extraction with subsequent prosthetic restoration. The cost relation:
- Root canal plus crown: typically CHF 1,400 to 4,000
- Extraction plus implant plus crown: typically CHF 3,500 to 6,500 (more in the article on implant cost)
- Extraction plus bridge (three units): typically CHF 3,000 to 5,000
- Extraction without restoration: cheap, but long-term often suboptimal due to bone loss and bite shift
The root canal treatment is in most cases the economically cheaper option and biologically the preservation of your own tooth. More on decision logic in the article Root canal or implant.
Success rates and cost efficiency
The study evidence for modern endodontics is robust. With proper execution using microscope, machine preparation and rubber dam, primary treatments reach success rates between 90 and 95 percent over five years. With revisions the success rate is 75 to 85 percent.
A successful root canal treatment with definitive restoration lasts with good care two to three decades. Calculated over the lifespan, the root canal treatment is thus a very cost-efficient investment. More on the clinical depth in the background article on root canal treatment.
What the cost estimate at Resident looks like
You receive a written cost estimate before treatment begins with detailed listing. Each individual service is listed with the corresponding SSO tariff position: diagnostics, anesthesia, rubber dam, root canal preparation per canal, root canal filling, possibly post build-up and definitive crown or build-up filling.
With acute pain we treat the cause of pain (usually the pulp inflammation) immediately, the detailed cost estimate for the full treatment follows afterward. More on the structure of a cost estimate in the article on the written cost estimate.
How we proceed at Resident
With acute pain or suspicion of pulp inflammation come without prior appointment. At the Winterthur and Rapperswil-Jona locations we are also open on weekends. With acute complaints at the other locations call us, we coordinate at short notice.
After diagnostics we discuss treatment options and costs transparently. With clear indication for the root canal treatment we begin, if you agree, in the same session with pain relief. The definitive treatment then runs over two to three sessions across several weeks.
Arrange an appointment at your location for the assessment. With emergency you find the emergency information on the emergency landing page.
