Emergency choice by complaint type
Knocked-out tooth
Speed counts. Reinsert within 30 to 60 minutes. Call the nearest open location immediately, do not first wait for an appointment.
For storage: tooth rescue box from pharmacy (often in stock) or cold UHT milk or saliva under the tongue. More in the article Dental accident insurance.
Acute tooth pain with swelling
Often sign of a tooth nerve inflammation or an abscess. Immediately call a location for emergency intake. With very strong swelling with breathing problems or high fever go directly to an emergency room.
Broken crown or bridge
Usually no acute emergency but intake on the next weekday. With exposed pain sensitivity the location may set an emergency provisional.
Root canal pain after several days
During the root canal phase pressure pain can occur. If the pain is new, strong or persists over several days, contact the treating location.
Child with tooth injury
Immediately call the location closest and accepting emergencies. With children the treatment of initial care is particularly time-critical.
Implant complaints
Contact the location where the implant was placed, if possible. With acute problems on the weekend: Winterthur or Rapperswil-Jona. More on implant care in the article on peri-implantitis.
What you should prepare
Before keeping an emergency appointment:
- Health insurance card and possibly accident insurance data.
- List of medications taken.
- Allergies and existing diseases.
- With knocked-out tooth: tooth correctly stored (rescue box, milk, saliva).
- Inform by phone that you are coming so the team is prepared.
When all Resident locations are closed
If all Resident locations are closed (e.g. Sunday evening after 12), there are supplementary emergency contact points:
- SSO emergency hotline: 0848 88 99 33 (cantonally organized).
- University Clinic for Dental Medicine Zurich: emergency consultation with restricted hours.
- Hospital emergency: with acute swelling with breathing distress or high fever go directly to hospital.
Costs in emergency
Emergency treatments are billed according to SSO tariff. With accidents accident insurance pays (more in the article Dental accident insurance). With disease-related pain the patient pays themselves, possibly pro rata the dental supplementary insurance. More in the article Supplementary insurance for teeth.
