Emergency choice by complaint type

Knocked-out tooth

Speed counts. Reinsert within 30 to 60 minutes. Call the nearest open location immediately, do not first wait for an appointment.

For storage: tooth rescue box from pharmacy (often in stock) or cold UHT milk or saliva under the tongue. More in the article Dental accident insurance.

Acute tooth pain with swelling

Often sign of a tooth nerve inflammation or an abscess. Immediately call a location for emergency intake. With very strong swelling with breathing problems or high fever go directly to an emergency room.

Broken crown or bridge

Usually no acute emergency but intake on the next weekday. With exposed pain sensitivity the location may set an emergency provisional.

Root canal pain after several days

During the root canal phase pressure pain can occur. If the pain is new, strong or persists over several days, contact the treating location.

Child with tooth injury

Immediately call the location closest and accepting emergencies. With children the treatment of initial care is particularly time-critical.

Implant complaints

Contact the location where the implant was placed, if possible. With acute problems on the weekend: Winterthur or Rapperswil-Jona. More on implant care in the article on peri-implantitis.

What you should prepare

Before keeping an emergency appointment:

  1. Health insurance card and possibly accident insurance data.
  2. List of medications taken.
  3. Allergies and existing diseases.
  4. With knocked-out tooth: tooth correctly stored (rescue box, milk, saliva).
  5. Inform by phone that you are coming so the team is prepared.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked

Which Resident location is open today?

On weekdays all six locations are open from 7 to 20. On Saturdays Winterthur and Rapperswil-Jona are open from 9 to 15, and Ermatingen from 9 to 13 by appointment. On Sundays Winterthur and Rapperswil-Jona are there for emergencies from 9 to 12.

Should I call before an emergency appointment or just come in?

Call ahead if you can. That way the team can prepare the treatment room and see you without unnecessary waiting. With a knocked-out tooth, call the nearest open location straight away, because here every minute counts.

Which location should I choose for a knocked-out tooth?

The nearest open location, because reinsertion should happen within 30 to 60 minutes. Until then, store the tooth in a tooth rescue box from the pharmacy, in cold UHT milk or in saliva under the tongue. Hold it only by the crown and do not clean it.

Is a broken crown an emergency?

Usually not. A broken crown or bridge can mostly be seen on the next weekday. If the spot is very sensitive to pain or has sharp edges, the location may be able to fit an emergency temporary. When in doubt, call briefly and describe the situation.

Who do I turn to when all Resident locations are closed?

Outside our opening hours, for example on a Sunday evening, you can reach the cantonally organised SSO emergency hotline on 0848 88 99 33. For complex emergencies in the Zurich region there is also the University Clinic for Dental Medicine with restricted emergency hours. With breathing distress or high fever, go directly to the nearest hospital emergency room.
