The Swiss Dental Society (SSO) organizes a rotating emergency service in most cantons. The hotline refers to the on-call practice in the respective canton.

Hospital emergency rooms for life-threatening situations
With acute swelling with breathing distress, high fever, strong bleeding or consciousness disturbance the nearest hospital emergency room is the right contact point, not a dental practice.

Which contact point in which emergency situation
Acute tooth pain without swelling
Contact point: nearest open practice, Resident or other. With non-acute pain often also possible on the next weekday.
Acute tooth pain with swelling
Contact point: immediately visit a practice. Swelling can indicate abscess that must be treated antibiotically and surgically. More in the article on root canal treatment.
Acute tooth pain with swelling plus breathing distress or high fever
Contact point: hospital emergency room. Life-threatening complication of a tooth infection is possible.
Knocked-out tooth after a fall
Contact point: nearest open practice within 30 to 60 minutes. More on acute treatment in the article Dental accident insurance.
Broken crown or bridge
Contact point: not necessarily emergency. Intake on the next weekday usually sufficient, except with exposed pain sensitivity.
Implant complaints with acute inflammation
Contact point: if possible the practice that placed the implant. With acute emergency on the weekend: Resident Winterthur or Rapperswil-Jona for initial care.
Child with tooth injury
Contact point: nearest open practice with children’s dentistry experience. With very young children or severe injury possibly directly university clinic.
What you prepare in emergency
- Health insurance card and possibly accident insurance data.
- List of medications taken.
- Existing allergies.
- With knocked-out tooth: tooth correctly stored (tooth rescue box from pharmacy, cold UHT milk or saliva under the tongue).
- Prior call to the planned practice so the team is prepared.
Costs in emergency

With emergency weekend treatments emergency surcharges according to SSO tariff can occur. We communicate these transparently before treatment.
